Week 5 Term 3

This week we worked together as a team to create a giant collage of Elmer the Elephant. Look how it grew and grew during the week. Pop in and see the finished work in Room 10.

The Key Competency of 'Relating to Others' was a focus in all our P.E. sessions this week working as teams with our classmates on a  hoop challenge .........

......and in pairs with our big buddies from Room 5 who helped us develop our skipping confidence.

At the start of our Animal Inquiry we looked at living and non-living things. One of the questions that came out of this was whether flowers were still alive if they were cut and put in water. We investigated this by popping some cut flowers into coloured water. They soon changed colour as they took up the water and after 4 days are still alive. Our estimates of how long the flowers will live for range from 2 days to 1 million days...this could be a long experiment!

Also as part of our Animal Inquiry we were very lucky to have a cold blooded visitor in the form of a Bearded Dragon. Well done everyone in Room 10 for having a go at touching this scaly reptile.
Finally during Friday's Discovery Time we had a demonstration from some Renwick 1 expert book makers and can now make our own books from an A4 sheet of paper.

Week 4 in Room 10

This week started off with a fabulous trip to the Suter to create art works inspired by the Dusky Sounds, Tamatea exhibition. Remember there is no charge to visit the Suter Gallery so please take the opportunity to visit with your child and let them teach you about the art works.

Still focusing on art, we have also been super busy working on our Laurel Birch style cat collages for the school calendar art fundraiser. These images will make great calendars, cards and diary covers. Order envelopes will be coming home this week.

We also worked on ways to improve our illustrations to accompany our weekly published writing stories. We hope you noticed how we had developed our drawings of people this week.
In phonics we have been learning about Magic 'e' . Here you can see how Magic 'e' has changed the word 'cap' into 'cape' by putting its magic onto its vowel friend 'a' and making it say its name rather than its sound. Magic 'e' makes no sound at all because it is magic!
In maths we have been warming up by keeping fit to 100...one of our favourite maths starters.
This week in our 'Animal' inquiry we have been learning about invertebrates and vertebrates . In the next few weeks we will look at each of the 5 vertebrate groups: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. We are hoping to bring in pictures of these from home to add to our display.
As part of this inquiry we had a discussion about whether or not a flower is still alive after being cut and put into a vase. We have put some flowers into coloured water to see what will happen and if we can answer this question.

Week 3 Term 3

Thank you for visiting our Room 10 blog. Please scroll down to see our learning from Week 3 of Term 3.
This week we had the opportunity to make our own bees wax food wraps. This video shows you the process involved. The idea has come from our school environmental agents. They did a waste audit last year and found that most of our rubbish as school comes from lunch boxes. We are aiming for 100% waste free lunch boxes!

Here we learnt about where the bees wax comes from.....
...and the next day we were using our own wraps that we made!
There was plenty of opportunity to practice the key Competency of Relating to Others in No Child Left Inside this week when we had to work together as parts of a caterpillar in races and searches for 'food'.

This week we started our art project for this years calendar fundriaisng project. We looked at cats painted by Laurel Birch and then made our own cat designs which will be surrounded by bright flowers and green leaves. These will be ready to view by the end of Week 4. Check out the school news letter for information about how you can purchase these. They make great Christmas gifts.

Discovery Time this week was inspired by the Tiger That Came To Tea.

Start of Term 3

Kia ora and welcome back to Term 3 in Room 10. We started the term with a powhiri to welcome new tamariki and whanau to our school community.
Our first week back this term focused on all things to do with 100 as we celebrated our 100th Day of learning together. Take a look at some of the activities we got up to including making trail mix with 100 pieces, a 100 jelly beans graph and 100 Crowns. You can also check out the amazing 100 posters that were made as part of a holiday challenge.
Our Room 5 buddies helped us to use an app which aged our faces so we looked like we were 100. We then wrote descriptions of what we would look like when we were 100 years old. Check them out on our Kidzstuff blog using the link on the right hand side of this page.
Our buddies also looked after us when we went to NMIT to see the Art exhibition by Rose Shepard who had been working in our school.
We were busy learning new sproting skills this week including hockey and petanque, I loved the "I can attitudes " with everyone having a go.
In maths with Sam we have been learning about time and ordering events in our school day.

In music we have been thinking about high and low sounds.
Discovery Time has focused on the Key Competencies of Relating to Others and Managing Ourselves. You will be able to spot plenty of examples of these in this slide show.
